Keeping Warm for Less

Keeping warm in your homeThis is the time of year when it seems like our money just goes out the windows, and doors. With the coldest time of year yet to come, it is crucial to help keep the warmth in, without breaking the bank. There are some low cost and no cost solutions that can make a big difference.

  • Install a programmable thermostat to keep your house comfortably warm in the winter.
  • In the winter, set your thermostat at 60° F when you are asleep or gone. Set it at 68° F when you are at home. This can save 10% or more on your heating bills every winter.
  • Make sure your ceiling fans are spinning the right direction, clockwise in the winter.
  • Move your furniture away from heating vents, registers and radiators to ensure proper airflow.
  • Install a door sweep, to keep any cold drafts from sneaking under the door.
  • Clear window insulation film can be very helpful, also keep drapes open, especially on south and west facing windows.  Radiant heat from the sun can help warm your home.
  • Change your furnace filter.
  • Adjust your water heater to 120 degrees.
